Redcat Rockslide RS10

I recently got the chance to try out one of my friend's new rock crawlers! (Click on the title of this post to jump to the companies product page)

I used to have an Axial AX-10 Scorpion, and it was ok, but it didn't crawl too well, even with all the extras it had.

When I tried out this new crawler from Redcat, I was amazed!!! It had a motor on each axel, and it had a specialty controller that fully utilized the dual-steering configuration.

I played with it quite a bit, and it crawled great! I can't wait to try it out in some harsher conditions!!!

I might even get one of my own!

Slash Needed Bearings (10x15x4) (8x16x5)

I ended up having a rear differential bearing that was locked up. I replaced it, and the one on the other side (for equality). I also replaced the center bearing that holds the center differential in place...

Dam... Am I glad I decided to go to college!

Working a minimum-wage job is f-ed up! I start at 8am, to 11am. Then I go from 5pm to 10pm...

And, most of the time, I am working a 2-man job alone, or I am dealing with other employees who think I am trying to steal their job, so they don't cooperate with me or let me help them. WTF!!!

As soon as I get enough money to afford a new laptop, I am probably going to quit. But at the same time, I really want to be able to have spare money for when the Slash breaks (not if, when).

Slash 4x4 Is Having Noise Issues

I have been trying to solve this grinding noise for a long time. When the motor blew it's bearing, I figured that was the source of the noise. However, when I finally got the motor repaired, the damned noise remained!!!

Well, I looked and looked, and I found the source. The damned driveshaft is bent, or something directly connected to it.

The problem started when I had to remove the driveshaft cover, in order to re-gear the Slash ( to cool it down ) , and so the driveshaft must have gotten a rock in it or something. I am really pissed off!!! There are three engineering flaws that caused this:

First flaw, the motor won't mesh smaller gears, without removing the driveshaft cover.

Second flaw, the driveshaft cover blocks the motor from meshing properly.

Third flaw, the motor overheats, from the factory, if you don't re-gear it.

Wait, thats only two flaws? WRONG!!! The driveshaft cover is designed wrong, and the motor mount is designed wrong. They both create the same issue, but those are two seperate parts, each with their own flaw!

Well, someday I will graduate from MS&T, and then maybe I'll be able to fix this crap, and make it run the way its supposed to!

Velineon Motor Has Been Repaired!!!

Well, the repair kit from the hobby shop came in, and I fixed it. The instructions that came with it were worthless, but I managed to figure it out!

YAY!!!

Now, I just need to find some free time between summer school and my job!

Traxxas Velineon Motor Issues

Well, when I first discovered that I was having heat issues due to overpowering the system, I re-geared it and cooled it waaaaaay down. I have been really careful to take good care of it, but I knew that it was only a matter of time before the motor failed.

Luckily, only a bearing failed, and whats funny about it, is another person I was talking to, told me that he had changed his bearings already, and his was only a month old.

Now, I am stuck with a motor that is in pieces, until they hobby shop gets a new set in, cause the guy I talked to at the track, had bought the last rebuild kit.

I believe my bearing failed due to heat, because when I tried to get it off the motor shaft, I discovered that it was melted/rusted onto the shaft. I still haven't been able to get it off, and I am afraid to use penetrating oil because I do not want to damage the magnet's protective coating.

Also, when I examined the motor casing, I saw no heat damage, so I got lucky there...

New ProLine M3 Caliber Tires For My Slash!!!

I just got some new tires for my Slash, and the control is unbelievable!!! I was able to throw it into a drift and then take off down the straight!!! I did a powerslide around the corners, then gunned the throttle and shot off like a rocket!!! I hope they don't wear out too quickly, because they are freakin' soft!

I'd like to thank Moose for showing me how to glue tires properly!!!

St. Louis Dirt Burner's New Layout!!!

I finally got on down to the track, and had a great time racing on the new layout!!!

It is so much better than the old layout, which was fun, but this new one is fast, technical & fun!!!

I love the crazy step-up-transfer-tabletop, and the double-double is tough to get down, but its awesome!!!

I was going to get some video, but I forgot my duct tape to attach the camera... Oh well, I'm going to inspect my car, then I am going back Tuesday or Wednesday...

I haven't gotten a chance to borrow my bro's camera and get some video, but I have been experimenting with some chassis-mounted camera positions... They are a lot more stable than the body-mounts, and the view is great! It just can't hold it's alignment over the big jumps...

Spent A Few Hours Trackbuilding...

I spent a few hours working on the new layout at Dirt Burners, and it was some fun and challenging work!!!

The track is looking great, the tube is layed out and is nice and smooth, and now all we have to do is wait for the rain to stop... Damn rain!!!

I wish I could be at the pro race on Saturday, but I have a pitbike race to go to...

I Created A Monster!!!

My brother "somehow" lost control of, and wrecked his OFNA Nitro buggy...

He hit a concrete curb (why was he on concrete?), and it shattered the battery holder and destroyed the reciever...

I felt kind of bad, really, because he couldn't afford to fix it, and because I had given him shit for buying a Nitro. So, while he wasn't looking, I took the reciever and servo out of my Slash, and put it in the OFNA. After about an hour of setting DIGITAL (yes, digital) endpoints, I finally got it ready to run!!!

"What have I done???!!!???", you say. "Created A Monster", I reply.

Hells Yeah!!!

Update: While setting his brakes, I noticed that his front was at 100%, and his rear at 0%... (Sarcasm: I wonder why he wrecked?)

Just Bought 2 New 2S LiPo Batteries!!!

I just got two new 2S Turnigy 5.0 Matched 5000mAh 20-30C LiPo batteries!!!

After a lot of thinking, I have finally plunged into the 2S category. I guess I just got sick of my Slash overheating.

So far, the battery has a great balance, and it has enough power to clear the jumps, but I can actually keep it on the road! The only problem is the top speed... So, I went from a 13/54 to a 13/52.

I'll keep you updated as I get more use out of them!!!

Slash VXL 4x4 - RPM A-Arms - FINALLY!!!

Well, I clipped a piece of tube sticking out on the local track, and it ripped off my right a-arm in the front.

I knew the hobby shop still doesn't have Traxxas parts in stock, (WTF Traxxas!!!), so I was really pissed off.

One of the local racers saw my vivid display of frustration, and commented that RPM finally came out with Slash parts, and that the hobby shop had those in stock.

I ran down to the hobby shop, and got the last black pair of a-arms.

After about an hours' worth of work, I had both a-arms replaced and my shock rebuilt (it blew out in the crash).

The RPM a-arms fit tighter than the stock ones, have almost no play (unlike the stock ones), and look a lot tougher.

THANKS RPM!!! (Keep puttin out new parts, how about some bearing carriers, caster blocks, etc...)

Cooling Fan Woes

Well, the other day, I was driving my Slash, and it died.

Since I was having battery troubles, I blamed it on the battery. But, when I attached a different battery, the ESC woldn't turn on. I freaked out for a couple minutes, thinking my ESC had fried... But, then I noticed the cooling fan I had put on it a couple days ago. When I unplugged the cooling fan to examine it, the ESC turned on! The cooling fan had shorted out! WTF!!!

Traxxas Slash VXL 4x4 Center Differential

I was lucky enough to recieve the Slash center differential from a good friend, and so far, it looks very promising! I lost a lot of power when it comes to running around the yard, but on the track, it rocks!

The differential works by allowing the vehicle to lose power. What? YES. When one of the vehicle's wheels comes off the ground, the center diff allows power to be lost through that wheel. Based on your diff oil, some of the power will remain with the other wheels. Why is this good? Because:

When using the sliper clutch, 50% goes to the front, and 50% to the rear. If one of the front wheels comes off the ground, then 50% stays in the rear, and maybe 45% goes to the loose front wheel. The remaining front wheel recieves about 5% power. The rear, still with power, will push the front end out, causing you to lose handling ability.

When using the center diff, if a front wheel comes loose, then the rear gets 30%, and the front gets %70, because the center diff transfers most of the power to the path of least resistance. Then, the loose front wheel has %60, but the other front wheel has %10 this time. So now, the front wheel with traction has more power than before, and the rear less. This causes the front to pull more, instead of being pushed by the rear!

Having Trouble Balancing LiPo

My charger has started spending up to 2 hours just getting my LiPo balanced during the normal balance/charge cycle.

When we put the LiPo on a different charger, the charger notified us that one or more of the balance leads weren't working. COld the battery be messed up? I hope not! If it is, hopefully the company will replace/repair it, since its maybe a month old, and has been used maybe 20 times.

Slash VXL 4x4 - Change Your Shock Oil

OMG!!! I hate to be so jumpy, but you need to change yo freakin' shock oil right now!!!

The Traxxas shock oil was watery, full of air, and pitch black!!!

I changed it out to 50wt in the rear, and 60wt in the front. It doubled its handling ability and made it drive like a champion!!!

Dirt Burners Fun Time - Short Slash Review

Well, I think its about time for a short Slash review...

I have been running at Dirt Burners and at Smac Trac, with a 3S LiPo.

Reliability: 8 out of 10
Why? Because I had 4 defective parts right from the start, see "Customer Service".
Other than that, it hasn't broken anything else, I even had a heat issue (234 degree motor & ESC thermal shutdown), and there is no visible or internal damage. The vehicle has awesome front and rear bumpers to absorb shock, and the linkages are thick and beefy-ish.

Handling: 6 out of 10
Why? Because of the tires (see "Tires" below), and the angle of steering lock, which isn't that sharp. Also, the back wheels lose all the power because there is no center diff (optional part). And, my rear shocks are half as useful as when I got it a month ago. Its obvious that the shock oil has degraded.

Customer Service: 10 out of 10
Why? When I called and complained about that defective parts, they sent new ones in the mail!!!

2.4GHz Radio: 9 out of 10
Why? It may not have a screen, but it can set endpoints for everything, and has adjustable expo for everything. I took the one point away because of the one-button setup menu, that is confusing as hell sometimes.

VXL System: 10 out of 10
Why? It has a very high durabulity, considering it withstood a thermal shutdown issue, ITS WATERPROOF, and it has just the right amount of torque to drift, and enough speed to clear the biggest doubles!!!

Servo: 5 out of 10
Why? The only reason it didn't get a 3, is because ITS WATERPROOF, and it hasn't broken yet. I assume the bell-crank system is the reason for that.

Tires: 2 out of 10
Why? They are great for driving on hard concrete, in fact, most of my time was spent tenderizing them on my driveway. BUT, if you even try to get dirty, wet or even try to delve into grass, NO GO!!! They suck, they are super-hard and loose tons of power. One point for durability, one point for being glued properly from the factory.

A 3S Battery Will Overheat Your Motor!!!

I was running at SmacTrac today, and when I got done, I had "Moose" (a fellow racer) use his heat gun on it.

The motor was at 234 degrees, and the ESC at 170 degrees (can anyone say FRIED CHICKEN!!!), which would explain the flashing red light, which can also mean LiPo cutoff. Turns out my LiPo wasn't dead, lol?

I will be reaming a few small holes in my body, and maybe going down another T on the pinion, but what else can I do?

Transponders Can Suck It!!!

I think that it is completely bullshit that only one company sells R/C transponders that work at our local indoor off-road track!!!

That damned company has a 100% monopoly over all of us! I don't care if it costs $130 or even $90, its a freaking scam! No tiny little piece of radio emission electronics is worth that much! Hell, I could get a reciever for less than that, and those control my whole car!

All these transponders do is send out the same signal, which identifies your vehicle... And they cost $90? WTF is that about!

I think racers everywhere should stand up and rebel against having our eyes gouged out by the transponder company AMBrc!!!

Screw them!!! Scratch That... FUCK THEM!!!

Racing Slicks On A 3S Brushless Slash 4x4

Well, I had some old racing slick tires lying around from my nitro days, and I decided to make them fit onto the Slash's rear.

As soon as they were on, I burned rubber all the way down the driveway. Then, the Slash actually did a wheelie, thats right, a 4x4 vehicle doing a wheelie!!!

The slicks were very old, so now they are all torn up, but it was fun! Video coming soon!!!

Never Going Back To Brushed, or Nitro!!!

Wow. I finally got myself a 3S racing LiPo. I put it in the Slash, turned on the low-voltage detection, and after the ESC calibrated itself, I gunned it!!!

The thing was on my no-skid concrete driveway, which is lit at night, and I pretty much burned rubber off of all four tires!!! The thing took off, the slipper clutch screaming and crying, and it flew away!!!

I drove it around a few times, then I found a small bump that launched the 4x4 vehicle into a perfect wheelie!

WOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I can't wait to tear it up at St. Louis Dirt Burners this weekend!!!

If I get some time I will post a comparison video between NiMh and LiPo. HAHHAHAHAHA!!!

Damn You Traxxas, And That Nitro!!!

First, I am really pissed at that guy who jumped his Nitro Buggy onto my Slash! I purposfully pulled to the side of the track, and hid in between the doubles so he could pass, and he decided to land on me instead. He had PLENTY of speed to clear that double!!!

Ok, now, the other half is Traxxas' fault. The two, yes two, bent rear axels I pulled out were bent, because they are some cheap mild steel or aluminum. They are not hardened steel like they should be.

This is a precurser to the otherwise good review on the Slash coming up...

St. Louis Dirt Burners!!!

I would like to give a quick shoutout, and thanks, to everyone at St. Louis Dirt Burners over the weekend!!! Not only did they help flip my vehicle back over, but they were very entertaining with some great wrecks, jumps, flips, tricks, etc...

The only bad thing is a huge nitro landed right on me, and now my "axel" is bent. This means, that since I finally "broke" something, I will start working on the Slash VXL 4x4 review.

Making A Practice Whoops Section

Well, Poptix and I just got done making 1/4 of our 2ft wide whoops section. We screwed down different sizes of PVC pipe in a pattern on a plywood board.

However, we forgot to account for the speed of the cars, where they will skip over the bumps, so our spacing is way too close. For the next 3/4 of it, we will double the spacing, then lay some turf or carpet over the whole thing, so its smoother, to give us a kind of high-speed whoops section.

We also tested the section by driving the Slash 4x4 and Hot Bodies VE8 over it a different speeds. We had actually built in a small spot, that kind of flips the car over if you hit it wrong. We also noticed that if you pop a wheelie right on the first pipe, you'll jump the whole thing, so we need to fix that too!!!

I can't wait for some more free time to write about the Slash and give it a very skeptical review!!!

Traxxas Power Cell 7-Cell 3300mAh

Oh Traxxas, you bastards!

After cycling my Traxxas "Power" Cell battery 3 times, I have found, that when charged from dead (6.3v), it only has 2500mAh. What a cheap piece of crap!!!

I can't wait for those Venom 2S 20C 5000mAh LiPo batteries to come in!!!

Also, I am still looking for a good-priced 3S Hardcase LiPo, so if anyone can help me, that would be highly appreciated!!!

Battery Chargers

This is a quick post, I have been busy with school lately...

I just bought the Dynamite Passport Ultra.

It is the best charger I have ever seen in my life!!! My friend's Venom charger comes in a very close second!

This charger I have, can do anything, and it also has an included temperature sensor, to monitor those pesky Ni-Mh batteries. It also has an insane amount of settings and safety features, including ten different, and loud, beep sequences for when the job is finished or theres an issue.

Other stuff:
Traxxas Slash 4x4 has been bought...
So far, no LiPo yet...
I have helmet camera mounts in two positions, one on fender, and one under body!!!
The VXL is awesome, even with only a 7-cell Ni-Mh running it...

I have decided to create this blog, in order to showcase and promote a new R/C race team that my friends and I have started.

We will be delving into short course 4x4 racing, 1/8th scale buggies & maybe drifting.

We are currently gathering funding, and doing extensive research (to be posted later), on which vehicles to purchase!

Please stay tuned for comprehensive comparisions of RTR and rolling chassis kits for each class, along with some new and creative styles of thinking about R/C cars (Hint: Real Cars).

Currently, I am studying to be a mechanical engineer, so I will be exploring detailed ways to improve the vehicles, and I have already come up with a mounting system for a full 1080p helmet camera that runs at 60fps. Expect some sweet videos soon!!!
